As cloud-based software continues to make it easier for employees to stay connected no matter where they are, the concept of working from home is no longer a novel one. In fact, mobile workers make up nearly 40% of the global workforce. It’s a win-win for both employees and companies. Employees gain improved work-life balance, and can greatly reduce the hours of commuting and babysitter fees; while companies save money on overhead charges and can widen their search for talented team members to join their ranks.

Whether you are a seasoned telecommuter or brand new to the wonderful world of remote working, we’ve put a list together of our top tips for a successful work-from-home lifestyle.

Face-to-face time matters.
Out of sight, out of mind is a real thing. Make sure to video conference with colleagues at least a few times a week to benefit from face-to-face connections. These online meetings can be quick 1:1 check-ins, project kickoffs or they could be larger team all hands. If appropriate, volunteer to do an update every now and then to give the wider company a look into your work and all of your valuable contribution. Being proactive and participating in company meetings also demonstrates that working remotely is both effective and productive.

Ergonomics does a body good.
You may not have room for a designated office at home. Any cozy space or nook can be made into your office space thanks to cloud technology and WiFi. However, hunched over a cup of coffee and laptop at your kitchen counter day after day will only lead to muscle aches and cramps. Make sure and set up a workspace that is comfortable, at proper eye level and promotes good posture. Your body will thank you for it!

Take breaks.
Research shows that people who work from home tend to work longer hours––even when sick. If you are all by your lonesome and don’t have co-workers to take breaks with you might find yourself staring at the screen for a lot longer than you should. Try setting a timer on your computer or mobile phone to remind you to stretch, get outside, walk around and to let your eyes focus on a surface that isn’t glowing.

Ditch the pajamas.
…at least a few times a week. If you just roll out of bed and comb your hair, you might not feel like you are truly in work-mode. Having a consistent morning routine and wearing work clothes (whatever is appropriate for your company culture) can give you and your productivity level a little boost. When you feel professional and ready to take on the day, your work will show it. Feel free to lose the uncomfortable shoes, no one will see that on a video call, after all.

Don’t be a stranger.
If you live near HQ and your schedule allows it, try and attend big events and team-building activities. It’s a great way to socially mingle and connect with your co-workers, which will only strengthen your online meeting and chat connections. You might want to think about creative and fun ways to continue to foster these relationships too. When appropriate, swap vacation, pet and family stories and photos during a Fuze––go ahead and have a little fun in between deadlines!
